2 Timothy

4 sessions through 2 Timothy

About 2 Timothy

The book of 2 Timothy is traditionally understood to be written by the Apostle Paul near the end of his life, while he was imprisoned in Rome. Most scholars date it to around AD 64-67, during Paul's final imprisonment under Nero before his execution. Some modern scholars question whether Paul personally authored this letter, but the text itself presents it as his writing. The letter is addressed to Timothy, Paul's spiritual son and trusted co-worker in ministry. Timothy was serving in Ephesus at the time, leading the church there amidst challenges that included false teaching, persecution, and discouragement.

Paul’s purpose in writing 2 Timothy was to encourage and strengthen Timothy in his ministry during difficult times. It is a deeply personal and heartfelt letter, reflecting Paul’s awareness that his own life and ministry were nearing their end. Paul urges Timothy to remain faithful to the gospel, to endure suffering for the sake of Christ, and to continue passing on the truth to others. He also provides practical instructions for confronting false teachers and staying rooted in Scripture.

The book is structured into four chapters. In chapter 1, Paul begins by reminding Timothy of his sincere faith and urging him to rekindle the spiritual gift God has given him. Chapter 2 contains exhortations for Timothy to be strong in grace, to endure hardship like a soldier, and to rightly handle the word of truth. Chapter 3 warns of increasing godlessness in the last days and highlights the importance of Scripture for teaching and equipping believers. Finally, chapter 4 includes Paul’s charge to preach the word faithfully, his reflections on his impending death, and personal greetings and requests.

Major themes in 2 Timothy include perseverance in the face of suffering, the centrality of the gospel, the importance of sound doctrine, and the enduring power of Scripture. Paul’s confidence in Christ’s victory over death shines through, offering hope and assurance to Timothy and all readers. In the larger story of the Bible, 2 Timothy serves as an important reminder to hold fast to the truth and faithfully pass it on to future generations, even in challenging circumstances. It is a letter of legacy, encouraging believers to endure for the sake of the gospel and to trust in God’s faithfulness.
