2 John

1 session through 2 John

About 2 John

The book of 2 John is a short letter written by 'the elder,' traditionally understood to be the Apostle John. Scholars generally date the letter to the late first century, around 85–95 AD, though the exact date is uncertain. The letter is addressed to 'the chosen lady and her children,' which could refer to a specific Christian woman and her household or, more likely, symbolize a local church and its members. The recipients were likely facing challenges from false teachers who denied foundational truths about Jesus Christ, particularly His incarnation.

2 John was written to encourage the recipients to remain steadfast in the truth of the gospel and to walk in love, while also warning them against welcoming or supporting false teachers. The letter emphasizes the balance between truth and love, urging believers to uphold both faithfully. The elder writes with a pastoral heart, desiring to protect the spiritual well-being of his audience and to maintain their unity in Christ.

The structure of the letter is straightforward. After a greeting (verses 1–3), the elder expresses joy at the faithfulness of some recipients (verse 4), exhorts them to love one another (verses 5–6), and warns about deceivers and false teachers (verses 7–11). The letter concludes with a brief note about the elder's desire to visit in person (verses 12–13). Despite its brevity, 2 John carries a weighty message about the need for vigilance in both doctrine and practice.

This letter fits into the larger story of the Bible by reinforcing the call to live in truth and love, themes central to the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. It reminds readers that genuine faith in Christ involves both right belief and right behavior. By addressing the dangers of false teaching, 2 John also contributes to the broader biblical theme of guarding the purity of the gospel message in a world filled with spiritual deception.
